Anatomy of the BREEJ Anti Bump System

The BREEJ Anti Bump System was developed to address each of the identified causes of Shaving and Razor Bumps.

As noted earlier, contrary to the conventional understanding that Shaving Bumps are primarily caused by ingrown hairs, we at BREEJ postulate that shaving bumps are primarily due to the trauma from shaving plus the reaction of damaged melanin cells.

The Shaving Method

This plays a role as more people develop shaving bumps when they use a type of the classic razor compared to other methods of shaving such as use of depilatories or cordless razors.

Classic type razors (except the newer triple and quattro razors) tend to cut the skin more frequently and may also cause more trauma to the skin compared to other shaving methods such as use of depilatories or cordless razors.

Inflammation Resulting From the Trauma of Shaving:

Symptoms of Acute Inflammation

Three classic effects of acute inflammation seen in people with Shaving/Razor Bumps are:

Redness

This is due to dilatation of small blood vessels within the damaged area.

Swelling

Swelling results from edema, the accumulation of fluid in the extra vascular space as part of the fluid exudate and - to a much lesser extent - from the physical mass of the inflammatory cells migrating into the area.

Pain

For the individual, pain is one of the best-known features of acute inflammation. It results partly from the stretching and distortion of tissues due to inflammatory edema and - in particular - from pus under pressure in an abscess cavity. Some of the chemical mediators of acute inflammation including bradykinin, the prostaglandins and serotonin are known to induce pain.

Additional causes of Inflammation:

Microbial and fungal infections

One of the most common causes of inflammation is microbial or fungal infection of the shaved area following cuts in the skin due to shaving. Bacteria release specific exotoxins - chemicals synthesized by them that specifically initiate inflammation - or endotoxins, which are associated with their cell walls. Additionally, some organisms cause immunologically-mediated inflammation through hypersensitivity reactions. Infecting agents may release specific chemical irritants that lead directly to inflammation.

Hypersensitivity reactions

A hypersensitivity reaction occurs when an altered state of immunological responsiveness causes an inappropriate or excessive immune reaction that damages the tissues. All have cellular or chemical mediators similar to those involved in inflammation.

Physical agents

Tissue damage leading to inflammation may occur through physical trauma as additional trauma from shaving, ultraviolet rays during exposure to sunshine or other ionizing radiation.

Other Factors in Shaving Bumps:

Melanin Hyperactivity

We believe this is a significant factor as Africans and people of African decent suffer most from shaving and razor bumps compared to other ethnic groups. This is also supported by the fact that the shaved area is usually more pigmented in most people regardless of their ethnic background, compared to other parts of the face.

The Damaging Effects of UV Irradiation

The damaging effects of UV irradiation exacerbate the problem of shaving and razor bumps resulting in additional damage and darkening of the skin in the shaved area.

Ingrown Hairs (or more appropriately "Entrapped or Embedded Hairs")

Ingrown Hairs (or more appropriately "Entrapped or Embedded Hairs") result when hairs growing normally enter or are entrapped by existing bumps on the skin.

The embedded hairs in the skin act as "foreign" bodies and cause additional inflammation of the skin with existing bumps.
